Jon Hamm: I need career excitement

28th January 2011

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Jon Hamm has fun starring in Mad Men, but enjoys challenging himself by playing other characters.

The 39-year-old plays ad executive Don Draper in the award winning American television show. Although he still loves the role after four seasons, Jon relishes taking a break from the programme to work on movies. He has appeared in gritty crime drama The Town and Alan Ginsberg biopic Howl and can next be seen in Sucker Punch. Jon loves to experiment with different roles and in Sucker Punch he plays High Roller, a client at an imaginary brothel who is determined to take a girls virginity.

"I guess the difficulty with playing in a television series is that you get to play the same role over and over again, he explained in an interview with British newspaper The Independent. And while it's fun and I love doing the show, it is nice to get the opportunity to do different things. What I've tried to do for the majority of my career is to do things that are challenging and exciting in different ways."

Jon has vowed to continue appearing in Mad Men as long as the storylines remain interesting. He is in awe of the shows writers and their capacity to continually dream up new and exciting scripts.

Although he is grateful to have enjoyed so much success in his career, he accepts the long working hours have taken their toll on his personal life. Jon has to stop himself spending all his time working so he can catch up with his loved ones.

"You have to make time; I could probably, if I wanted to, work 365 days of the year, but you do get exhausted, he added. I did eight months straight with Mad Men, The Town and Sucker Punch. Life is too short; you definitely want to live life as well." (C) Cover Media
