Simbu’s eagerly awaited Dharani directed 'Osthi', release on December 8 has run into trouble. 'Osthi' is a remake of Bollywood blockbuster Dabangg, which starred Salman Khan in the lead. In the Tamil version, Simbu, Richa Gangopadhyay, Revathi and others are in the cast.
Film 'Osthi' is facing a threat from the Tamil Nadu Film Exhibitors Association (TNFEA). The Tamil Nadu Film Exhibitors Association (TFEA) has put a red card on 'Osthi', which is to be marketed by Reliance Entertainment. The producers of the film has sold the satellite rights of the film to Sun TV, which is facing the heat from TFEA over unpaid dues it owes the theatre association.
About a month back, TFEA took a decision to boycott Sun Network, as the group did not return the caution deposit amounting to Rs 2.4 Crore taken from various theatre owners for their earlier films. At that time they made it clear that films for which Sun TV has taken satellite rights will be banned if their money is not returned.
Meanwhile, the makers of 'Osthi' have written to Sun Pictures to clear the issue within next 48 hours else they would cut the ties with the channel. Now the ball is in Sun TV’s court as they will have to pay the outstanding amount to TFEA if they have to retain 'Osthi's' television rights. Reliance has issued a statement saying they will wait for a while, otherwise they will cancel the TV rights and go ahead with the release on December 8 with the support of TFEA.
